Finding Time to Exercise, Workout or Run-Where Does the Time Go!

As a Father of 3, husband, son, brother, business owner, entrepreneur, coach, partner, homework checker, clothes folder, dog walker, story teller, cook, dishwasher, bookkeeper, maid, chauffer, movie watcher, hugger, masseuse, volunteer, vacation planner, IT person, dreamer, runner and sometimes marathoner, I am pulled in many directions. However I know the importance of being fit. Being unfit would hinder my ability to do fulfill my roles, of which the most important is being a Dad and Husband!

As you know, being fit helps you create more energy so you can enjoy life. Why waste the day being tired or sick and spending the day at the doctor’s and paying doctor’s bills! You have a choice. Don’t let others take your hard earned money by being unfit, but that is another article!

Here are some tips that can help carve out some extra time to work out;
• Hire a babysitter that you trust to watch your little ones.
• If you belong to a gym, take advantage of their child care services. It’s less expensive than a babysitter traveling to your home. And they get to socialize with others.
• If you are running, use a jogging stroller. Usually when you increase the intensity, you can reduce the time to work out.
• If your kids are older, have your kids run, skate or bike along with you. You can have them be your support team that carries your water and GU.
• If you have a short amount of time, break up the workout. 15-20 minutes in the morning as you get up, and 15-20 minutes in the evening will burn calories. Many people like 10 Minute Trainer!
• Develop a childcare swap with other parents, where you can drop off your child as you go for a run.
• If your child is at an activity, like swimming, baseball, piano or soccer, you can run around the field or block and do some pushups or pull ups by the jungle gym. Remember the Abs!
• Most important, write it down in your daily planner. A planner will keep you accountable.
• Create a goal, like signing up for a 5K or a marathon, and work your way back, noting all the exercises and running you need to do to prepare for the race.
• Always show up. Be consistent, so people will know this is “me” time to recharge.
• Share your plan with everyone involved, because if you tell them it is important, they will work with you.
• Ask! If you don’t ask others to help, you will not receive it. Your friends and family may have other ideas that will work with your lifestyle.

Now go out and run! Have fun! Please leave other suggestions also!

End the Trend of Obesity

Not to long ago the Surgeon General Richard H Carmonda, MD read a testimony before the United States Senate and said, “Because of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.”

One of Michelle Obama’s first initiatives as First Lady was Let’s Move. Let’s Move was developed to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. The program focuses on providing parents more information on nutrition and exercise, improve food quality in schools, make healthy foods accessible and affordable for families, and increasing physical education.

While having knowledge is a start and along with making schools a healthier place, that is only the beginning. As adults and parents, we need to set the example for our children. If they see us eating healthy, they will eat healthy. If they see us exercise and be active, they will be active too.

The numbers are staggering
· We spend approximately $150 billion a year treating obesity related illnesses. Can you imagine how cheap health insurance costs would be if that cost were eliminated?
· 2.8 million adults die from the result of being obese or overweight. How many children are left with only a Mom or Dad, instead of both.
· In 2010, nearly 43 million children under the age of five were overweight.

What astonishes me is that obesity is preventable, and we can End the Trend of Obesity. We have to, for our future!

To increase exercise and fitness, I will donate $10.00, to Team for Kids, for every order of the very popular P90X, Insanity, TurboFire, or any Fitness Program found on http://www.noahlam.com/

To have the most nutrition ounce for ounce, any orders of Shakeology – The Healthiest Meal of the Day on Autoship, a donate of $10.00 will also be made to Team for Kids, for every initial order place on http://www.noahlam.com/

Team for Kids provides free or low-cost school and community-based health and fitness programs to children who would otherwise have no access to regular physical activity. Currently, our programs serve nearly 100,000 children each year in more than 400 schools across New York City, the nation, and South Africa. In addition, Team for Kids equips children with the tools they need to become physically fit for life, while also incorporating goal-setting, character-building, and nutrition education.

Our future is so important, please help me End the Trend of Obesity, and I look forward to working with each of you be healthy and making donations on your behalf!

Becoming a RRCA Certified Running Coach

A couple weeks prior, I sat in a classroom in East Hanover, NJ for a course to prep me to become a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Certified Running Coach.  The classroom was held on the second floor of the REI retail store.  About 30 other people filled the rest of the seats, some came to enhance their coaching businesses, some wanting to start a new business, and some just wanted to have more knowledge to run better.  I think we all left with a better understanding of how to run better.

Besides learning a lot of information to help runners do their best with simple tips on running faster and stronger.  The most important thing I came away with was the fact that I now have additional tools to help make our world a healthier place for our children to step into.  I am so excited knowing that as I become a better runner, I hope that I can inspire more and more people to become active.  Whatever the exercise, our world is becoming healthier!

Along with the fact that I am a mentor for Team for Kids, whose mission is to end childhood obesity, is a great combo!  Currently I have been assigned 4 mentees, who have different degrees of running abilities.  Some have run the race before, but most have never done 26.2 miles ever.  My goal is to provide as much support and motivation, so that they will be able to complete the 2011 ING New York City Marathon.  It’s really an experience that you need to add to your bucket list.
I look forward to helping all runners become better runners!
Well on the day before Independence Day 2011, July 3rd to be exact.  After marking off the 100 question test online, I held my breath as I pressed the enter key at the bottom of my RRCA Certification Exam, and the results immediately revealed a 91.   I exhaled with a sigh of relief, because I was not prepared to spend another weekend reviewing the course.

The exam was a little tricky in some parts, however the teamwork with the other students in the course helped answer many of the confusing questions and on the others it confirmed that I knew what I am doing.  Like most things, coaching is an art form where, information, science and collaboration come together to help enhance a clients experience to be a better runner.  And every runner is unique and different.

Now that I am reflecting, who would have thought that I would be training for my 6th Marathon, let alone do 4 marathons in 12 months!  I am really proud with the fact that I stayed consistent for my health as well as set an example for my kids.

Being a Running Mentor for Team for Kids for the 2011 ING New York City Marathon

Today, I left early from work and picked up the kids from Day Camp. I stood outside the glass dorr and waited for the time to reach 4:00pm for the official release of the children. As I peeked past the glass, I see Zachary sitting on the floor all tired and beat from a busy day of running, swimming and other frolicking. Emily, now a Counselor in Training, was attending to her flock making sure they are kept entertained as they waited to their parents or grandparents. Elijah was hidden by the wall, so I just stood there for the door to open.

As I walked in, the kid mob meshed with the parent mob. Elijah jumped up, smiled and asked me what was for dinner. He requested chicken wings, and I said, “Okay!” Now, remember I do not eat this all the time!

As soon as we got home, Zachary went to the mailbox and grab what was left by the mailman. With a thud after he dropped the letters on the dining room table and rushed outside to play some more with Elijah. I immediately grabbed the envelope that looked like it had something worth opening.

It’s a dark blue technical running shirt with Mentor Team for Kids in the lime neon green colors. I felt so proud holding that shirt up in the air. Immediately, I thought back to when I chose Team for Kids as my charity of choice for automatic entry to the 2008 New York City Marathon. It was great timing since, I was assigned to 2 wonderful runners with different running skills, both running a full marathon for the first time!

I am so excited to communicate with them and see how they progress.  Just thinking about the first Sunday of November is so exciting.  This year, Irene and I will get to watch the Elite runners, Raymond (her brother) and 40,000 others run by on the streets of New York City.

So many things have happened over the past 3 and a half years since I decided to change my lifestyle. Numerous miles logged, 5K’s done, many half marathons finished, 5 full marathons completed, and 55lbs lighter.  More importantly, who would have thought, Irene and the 3 kids would have done several running races also.  In addition, Irene and I are P90X grads and Emily is doing TurboFire!

I get a tingle each time a friend said that they did a 5K, started running or go back to the gym.  Running the NYC Marathon with Irene, her sister, her brother and a few close friends was an awesome accomplishment!

Now all of my running has led me to become a RRCA Running and a Team Beachbody Fitness Coach, where I have the opportunity to Create a Healthier Community for my Children to step into. My kids deserve it, and so do all the children in the world.

If you or you know someone who wants to be more fit, lose weight or try something new. Please call me or email me!

Help me pay it forward!

And to my mentorees, Jessica and Valorie!  Keep up the good work!  I am so happy for you!  You are on a journey of a life time!
